Prelegal — Privacy Policy

PreLegal is a browser extension that helps you understand contracts you open in Google Docs or as PDFs. This policy explains exactly what data PreLegal handles and why. Plain version first: PreLegal reads a document only when you point it at one, sends that document's text to our review service to generate the analysis, and does not sell your data or use it for advertising.

What we access

Google Docs content — when you have a Google Doc open and you have connected your Google account, PreLegal reads that document's text through Google's official Docs API to analyze it. It reads the document you are viewing; it does not browse your Drive or read other files. If you apply a suggested redline, PreLegal writes that specific edit back to the document through the same API, at your explicit click.
PDF content — when you open a PDF and press Review, PreLegal fetches that PDF and extracts its text for analysis. PDFs are read-only.
Your settings — the backend address and your preferences are stored in your browser (Chrome storage). Your API key, if you set one, is stored only on your local device and is never synced to other machines.

How your document is processed

To produce a review, the text of the document you are analyzing is sent to the PreLegal review service, which uses a third-party AI model provider (Anthropic) to generate the analysis. The document text is used solely to produce your review and answer your questions about it. We do not use your documents to train AI models, we do not sell or rent your data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Google user data — limited use. PreLegal's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google Docs content is used only to provide the contract-review features you invoke, is not transferred to others except as needed to provide those features (the AI model provider that generates the analysis), is not used for advertising, and is not read by humans except as you request support or as required by law.

What we retain

The review service processes your document to generate a response and does not persist document contents after the request completes. Reviews you have run are cached in your own browser so the panel can show them again, and are cleared when your browser session ends. You can remove the extension at any time to delete its locally stored data.

PreLegal is an AI document-analysis tool. It does not provide legal advice, and using it does not create an attorney–client relationship. AI-generated analysis can be incomplete or wrong. Consult a licensed attorney before signing or relying on any document.
